When your air conditioner is on the engine idle increases to drive the air compressor because of the extra horsepower it uses when your engine is under load. When air is not engaged your engine idles at lower rpm. If your car is carburated adjust your carburater idle screw to bring rpm up. If the cut out continues after that, it may be an ignition pick up coil problem inside the distributor.

Have you done a compression check which will reveal the true health of the motor and valve train? Has the [EGR] exhaust gas recirculatory valve been checked? Plus all the vacuum lines. When the A/C is activated it has a idle solenoid that is activated electrically that raises the idle to prehibit stall out. If it were me I'd do a major tuneup which will reveal the problem since per the article it say a minor tune was do.

Have you checked the charging system, you should have 13-14 volts at the battery when the car is running, confirm this with a voltmeter, perhaps the alternator is wearing out,a simple test is to put all of the accesories on with the car running and measure the voltage at the battery,if its low it will cause the cutting out,if that all checks out try a new fuel filter and replace the air filter, and check the rubber house on the pcv valve for cracks and a hissing sound coming from the hose, just about every escort I have ever seen has these crappy hoses on the pcv to manifold hose.good luck-

Could be a Torque Converter Control (TCC) solenoid problem if it's an electronic transmission. Have it scanned for transmission codes first. Its a small switch (solenoid) on the side of the transmission. You describe the common symptom for this problem. When the air conditioner is on the motor works harder at a higher rpm keeping it from dying. Its a simple fix to replace one. The key statement here is that it dies at red lights. The torque converter is NOT disengaging and killing the motor. Possibly.

When you say cut out do you mean it stalls or that it completely loses power and shuts off? If it's stalling have you checked your air filter, fuel filter or your PCV valve lately? If either one of those is dirty or clogged it can cause those symptoms you have explained. All are relatively inexpensive and simple to replace too so I would maybe start there if you haven't already checked them.

Have you checked the distributor? Also if your car has fuel injection the injectors could need a good cleaning. Try a gas treatment and see if that helps

Sounds like your idle needs to be raised just a little...
When you're running the AC it automatically increases to offset the added load.
