When I got my laptop, it came with a DVD player instead of a CD burner. But when i put in a DVD, it says I don't have a decoder installed. I thought laptops that come with a DVD player already had a "decoder."

What the heck is a decoder anyways and do you know why it won't play my DVDs?? My Dvds work fine in a regular DVD player, but you can't take those on planes or buses like you can a laptop. Where do I get it installed - this Decoder??? Will it cost an arm and a leg to get it installed or do you free download it somewhere??

Help!!

Try going to the support section of the computer manufacturer's web site. Every major company has free downloads of the drivers needed for their computers.
For example: support.dell.com
Make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

If it still doesn't fix the problem, most companies also have free tech support through live chats or email. Get one of the tech people to help.

A decoder is a software program that can read the contents of that DVD. Try downloading one like http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Do you have any other video playing software that supports DVD? Windows Media Player does not support playing DVDs alone.

If not, then you need to get yourself software that plays DVDs like WinDVD or PowerDVD. That should solve your problem.
