Mainly the writing was much better...if youever catch the classic times of the first few seasons, it is amazing how much better the writing as then compared to now. And the actors were amazing considering the following list of cast from just the early 90s:
Jon Lovitz
Dennis Miller
Dana Carvey
Phil Hartman
Kevin Nealon
Mike Myers
Chris Farley
Chris Rock
Julia Sweeney
Adam Sandler
David Spade
Rob Schneider

The talent level isn't up to par with those of the casts of the 80's,90's. It seems like nowadays people start out on the show. When back in the day, people started out on Comedy clubs and got recognized that way first and then when they went on TV they exploded onto MegaStardom. Think about it, who has made the jump successfully to movies or tv lately. Aside from Will Ferrell.

I think the writing has been the major problem the last 5 or 6 years. There have been plenty of great cast members, but they get nonsense skits like The Falconer and stuff. However, I think the last year has seen a resurgence in creativity in the series with the digital shorts and a few other highlights. We'll see what the new season brings in the fall.

"Familiarity breeds contempt." It was still in a novelty stage in the 90,s. Regardless of the popularity of any program, it becomes 'old had' after years of being televised. The truth be told; the 90's actors would not elicit the same favorable response today because the bar has been raised. Today's actors are equally as funny, but it is too much of "been there, seen that" to peek your interest over time.

The show has gone through rough patches in the past too. Honestly, I think the show needs some fresh blood both in front of and behind the cameras. Lorne Michaels did a great job for a long time, but it's clear he's not taking the time to recruit the best comedians for the show anymore, but rather taking whatever he can get. And the writing has been quite subpar lately. I know Tina Fey has been headwriter for some time, but maybe somebody knew would get some fresh ideas on the show.

Will Ferrell, Sandler, and Chris Farley amoung others all started making movies instead of a sketch comedy. All the talent is offered movie deals.
