Of course it's a real place!
Otherwise, how would they film it?
Duh!!! hehe. ;)
But seriously, to answer your question...
I think if Middle Earth represented a real place on earth today,
It would be the hills of Ireland, along with castle ruins there.
I would say New Zealand, but that's a little too easy. =)
And if Mordor were a real place,
it would be the headquarters of the Northern Sudanese gov't.
The reason is because they are oppressing the people of southern Sudan, and specifically in Darfur. They have been starving, killing, raping, village-raiding, and committing genocide for years. I don't think it gets much more evil than that.

Middle Earth could be a symbolic representation of the United States or the world.

Middle Earth exists in the hearts & minds of all of us who love good & hate evil. It is a place to go when the cares of the modern world are too great to bear.

There is a place very similar to Middle Earth and it is Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennesee. There is even a Dark Lord here who happens to have a very large ring. Come check it out... but personally you should check out Virginia.

It's taken from Tolkien's studies of times that were, when the world still had magic to it. I don't mean Sauron ever existed.
He even said he was inventing nothing, but discovering why things were as they were, and not how they should be.
It's real in an abstract, indirect way.

All I know is that the word "mediterranean" literally means middle earth. There's some food for thought.
