Soccer is a game where not necessarily the best Team wins. In addition, the World Cup is a very unique tournament in which tension and "points strategy" are very important factor.
Yes, Italy may have not played the best game, but if you look at the stats (go the FIFA official site) you'll noticed few important facts: shots on goal, fouls, corner kicks...
Then, in Italy there are 60M coaches and each of them will want to make their own formation... but the reality is that only Lippi takes the responsibility of the Team.
Plus the big argument about the referee: a lot of USA's fans, blinded by their ignorance on understanding soccer, are complaining about the ref e his calls.
In reality, who really has to complain is Italy. Here are some facts that can be confirmed if you have recorded the game:
- In the 5th min. Totti was given a yellow card while he did not even touched the opponent
- In the 27th min., when USA scored, the ref called a foul of Cannavaro on Reyna which it was a perfect tackle on the ball. From that foul USA scored (own goal Zaccardo)
- De Rossi red card was legitimate: he elbowed McBride and he deserved to be ejected.
- All the first half, both Gilardino and Luca Toni received "special attention" from Mastroeni, Pope and Onyewu.
- Mastroeni red card was legitimate: that foul is automatic red card.
- In the whole game, at least 4 offsides called against Italy were NOT offside (few to remember called to Luca Toni and Iaquinta). FYI, usually calling a player offside, that player has good chances on scoring goals.
- The goal scored by Beasly on the 66th min., had McBride in front of Buffon, and he even made a move with his right leg to disturb the goalkeeper action. In soccer, that is NOT a goal, but a foul for Italy. So, that was one of the few good calls.
- On the other hand, in the min. 36, when Gattuso newly entered scored, Luca Toni was stopped for an inexistent offside: that goal should have been allowed.
- Someone complaining about Pope's red card??? Helloooo... he committed so many fouls the firs half, what would you have expected? The foul he committed on Gilardino (min. 47) was a yellow card foul, but because he was already "booked", automatically the red card was legitimate.
Are the above points enough?
So, for people like "Angel" I say to be happy about the tie, and at the end, who is going further is a better team but do not complain about things that do not make any sense.
To all the others, just read who are the finalists of the World Cup in the last 40 years (you can start from 1970...) then you will open your eyes on who will be in the final this year too.

We got lucky and screwed at the same time. Ghana won its game, so neither the US or Italy could be taken out or move up in the ranks. Plus, the tie point helped a little when the US team takes on Ghana on Thursday. If Italy wins against the Czechs in a big way and USA wins by three or four goals, those teams move up. Course, the ref was a complete fool and I hope he doesn't oversee another game. There were too many unjustified red cards.

That game was one of the most exciting since the world cup started. For those that think that the US was lousy I remind you that we tied (maybe even won if that goal was counted) with only 9 players. I think Italy played good but the US gave it all we have proving that we want to stay in till the end. For the person who asked why it wasn't counted its because one of our guys was standing in front of the Italian goalie and they said that may have blocked his view and because of that it wasn't counted if he would have moved one or two steps we would have WON!!! I think this is the beginning of some good games on behalf of the USA, or atleast I hope. GO USA!!!!

Italy fell apart for the 27th minute other than that they won the match. Italians scored all the goals problem is Zaccardo's goal was in the wrong friggin net.

The American team showed a very good and positve spirit. The italian team seemed to be playing old school techniques. The US team was palying as a team and had a higher level of fitness. I was very impressed by their performance. I was also impressed by the cute American Chick in the US fans !!!!!!

the ref was horrible. he gave totti a yellow card for doing soemthing harmless and an american was grabbing on to Italian players and was caught twice and nothing. Italy should've won, and if there was a different ref, they probably would have

the people saying italy should have won are funny. they're either incredibly biased or didnt watch the game. italy got handled until the U.S. went down a man, and even then italy coulnt beat them.

Yeah, that ref seemed totally against the US for some reason. Does anyone exactly why that goal the US made didn't count?

refs = crappy. the main ref had been suspended last world cup for bad calls. USA played with a lot of fire and energy but still didnt really score. im still pissed at McBride for "obstructing the goalie" when he was just offsides. good result I think...
