There are a couple of flaws in your question: 1) The federal government doesn't collect property taxes, that is done at the local level to fund local projects. 2) The native Americans never purchased the land either, so there is no deed of ownership. While many injustices were committed against the native American population several hundred years ago, simply giving back all the land would not undo those injustices...and actually would cause more innocent people to suffer if such an arrangement was made.

First off, Native Americans may not have been the first ones here. If you do a little research into the Kennewick Man, which is an Asian type skeleton They found, I believe in Washington state, that pre-dates Native Indians my a long shot. They figure Asians migrated there when the continents were attached or froze over at Alaska/Russia. I may not be stating this all exactly, I am going from memory, but check it out. The reason I tell you this is because the Native Americans are trying to suppress this information because if it turns out to be true, well that would just rewrite history and they wouldn't have been the first ones here. It means perhaps this land was settled by someone else first. I don't think I know much Native history. Were all the tribes united or did they have their own territories? If they did, did one tribe ever fight and take away the other tribes land? Why do we need to pay them taxes? They live in America tax free, we give them a government check, housing, food assistance. They even have their own government. A country within a country. They can build casinos on land that we gave them, make billions of dollars and never pay a penny in taxes. So now, who is actually better off and why should I give them more money than they are getting now????

No matter which way you look at it, property taxes may be too high, but the garbage has to be picked up, the streets need to be maintained, Fire and Police departments have to have money to function, and schools need books and building maintenance.
Since this tax money stays in your own city, your local elected officials are the ones spending it, and hopefully, trying to stretch every dollar to the breaking point.
There isn't much coming in at federal levels anymore, because we have a war to pay for. The President wants the states to be less dependent on federal aid, so my guess would be that local taxes are only going to go up.
I don't want to sound argumentative, but unless we haul our own garbage to the landfill, fix the potholes in front of our own homes, stand ready with garden hose in hand if the neighbors garage catches fire, and be on call for any 911 calls, there just isn't any way other than the tax to keep any kind of public services running.

It looks like you already got a lot of good answers. The fact is, even though it's hard to pay the tax when it come around, it brings in a lot of money to pay for the things we needand enjoy in our communities. I won't go into it all 'cause people ahead of me already said it. Get involved in you town meeting etc. You pay taxes it's part yours.
It may be easier to pay if you compare it to the things you enjoy. For example, you have a car so you have to buy gas, if you have a horse you have to buy feed, you own land/property you pay property taxes.
Fact is the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and the taxes have to be paid.

Property taxes are not to pay for the land... it's essentially a way to get the richest people pay the most for city services, with each person's contribution paid according to how much the land they own is worth.

Property taxes are used to support our local governments and communities,IE: schools, roads, highways, libraries, courts, landfills, etc,etc....We live in one of the greatest places on earth and if you don't believe me, ask someone from a foreign country who has paid dearly to come to the USA. It's the price we pay for the life we lead!

Sonny boy, have you got a lot to learn. Why don't you do some solid research on what your state's property taxes go for. Who pays for your teachers in schools? Who pays for the Poilice who protect you. Who pays for your City Parks? Who pays your Mayor and other city employees. Wake up to reality young fellow. Learn about things before you speak. We live in a FREE society but someone has to pay for the things to keep it free.

Omg because the Natives complain all the time!!!......so they don't really have to pay anything......they get money all the time so its not like they really have to work.....and a good amount of ppl feel sorry for "Natives"....there have been wars going on since forever....and how many wars do you know of that gave the ppl of that land, land in return?......why should the "natives" get more than the average American?....we won the war and claimed Our land.....meaning that its not theres anymore.....so they shouldn't get anymore than we do.

Property taxes support the local county governments, not the federal government.
