Thes are different encoding formats for video. AVI is a Microsoft invention. MPEG actually is a group that is in charge of developing standards in both audio and video encoding. MPEG-1 is usually used for VCDs. MPEG-2 is used for DVDs. MPEG-3, aka mp3, is a audio compression format. MPEG-4 is another video format that is much better at compression than MPEG-2. There are others but not really relevant. MOV is an Apple format used in their Quicktime players. Divx is a compression format using the MPEG-4 (specifically the lossy MPEG-4 part 2).
