The first part of this answer is to understand exactly what you mean by reading people? Do you mean what they're thinking? Their true character or personality? Just who they are? Either way, I find the best way to understand, or read, a person, is to try to imagine why they do the things they do. Actions as simple as mannerisms, the way they carry themselves physically, speech habits, are all windows who a person truly is. You must look at people objectively, otherwise it will be impossible to discern who they really are if you are led by appearances. Of course, appearance should be taken into account, in the way they present themselves, but keep in mind that there are many reasons for the way people present themselves, from the fact they think it looks good to hiding their true identity. As far as books go- I find reading literature to be one of the best way to become familiar with the human condition, and to provide a better understanding of people as a whole. Think about what you read, imagine the characters as real people.

Scratches head... when someone says "reading people" I think of ESP... a psychic reading

So... I'll just say that no books ever helped me. One day I tried and succeeded, and since have given many accurate readings...

BUT DON'T ASK FOR ONE!
