Two short stories that I read in high school pop to mind right away. They were both by Bret Harte. The first is called The Luck of Roaring Camp. A study of human nature with an unhappy ending. The next is The Outcasts of Poker Flat. A story that shows no matter how you live your life we all die in the end.
The other book that comes to mind is much more recent and I just finished reading the last book in the series. The book is called Hade's Daughter by Sara Douglass. Books never make me cry, but I was crying my eyes out the last fifty pages of the book. It is a fantasy book set in the time after the fall of Troy and brings togther greek mythology and the ancient beliefs of the british isles.
Let me know what your favorite books are...I need new books to read. I am really into fantasy and sci-fi.

I used to work at a library when I was younger and on my breaks I would go searching for a great old time 1800 early 1900 read and I found a short stories book by French Author Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893). They seem like they could be an Alfred Hitchcock/Twighlight Zone-ish so it could be somewhat what you're looking for. GREAT BOOK with tons of stories that make you go WOW!! I was fascinated by all his stories that one still sticks out in my mind its called, "The Necklace" (1885). You can read it in its entirity below. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know!!

I think you would really enjoy Christopher Paolini's Eragon books, which are set in a neo-medieval setting and involves dragon riders. These dragon riders and their dragons wage war upon a dictator king and his destructive hordes of soldiers. This is powerful stuff, wonderfully written and fascinating to read.

"I Am David" by Anne Holm. I just was blown away.
Also, "A Memory of Running" by McLarty. I had trouble getting into the book, but by the time I finished it I really did say "Wow" out loud.
