I have had turtles and a Chinese water dragon for pets. Sherman (female) lived to be about 5 years old and grew to 28" (mostly tail). I am ready to try another reptile but haven't quite decided on what to get. I have always loved bearded dragons because of their personality. I have also heard good and bad things about adult iguanas...some seem to be good pets but have also heard horror stories (especially about bites and wounds from their tails). I would like to let my new pet free roam, but maybe not because I also have 2 cats. My cats got along fine with Sherman, who had free roam and stayed mostly in her tree or on her favorite shelf when she wasn't in her cage. I am fairly knowledgable about the proper care of reptiles. I think now it's just a personality thing of the reptile I choose. Any thoughts on which I should choose?

How can iguanas only poop once a month? That doesn't sound normal.

I was involved for many years in the rescue of unwanted snakes and lizards...I'm sure I don't have to tell you what type of lizard we mostly took in....yes...Iguanas...Because of their size, biting and scratching, having a temper and many other things...The size is the main thing...And as far as "free roam" ...I don't believe in it...If you truly want to take the best care of your new friend....I would suggest a Bearded Dragon. Give it 60 to 100 gallon tank and do everything to the letter. Read read read up on the animals husbandry and natural history BEFORE bringing it home..(which you probably already know). Beardies are great! They will live up to 10 years or more if cared for properly...And you CAN take them out occasionally and let them roam...UNDER SUPERVISION of course....
Good Luck....have fun with your new saurian.

Iguana's are better for advanced reptile owners. Bearded dragons are are very good pets; they have good personalities, and are fairly easy to take care of. I personally am going to get a beardy soon.

Definately a brearded dragon. Igs are lot of work, get rediculouslyt big (5 - 6 ft), and can be difficult to handle. If you have a cat allowing oyur reptiles to roam free is asking for trouble - instinct can easily kick in ands then itsw no more lizard!

My advice is to get a bearded dragon because iguanas are more likely to cary salmonella. Plus iguanas need to eat much more than just plain o'l lettuce. I have a bearded dragon, its tame, its cool, and its easy to take care of.

If you have enough room get an iguana
Its great how they interact with you and they get nice and big.
Not alot of room? Get a beardy
They stay pretty small and are very easy to keep.
