My cd\dvd driver is plugged into the computer. But my driver is nowhere on the computer. It is now gone. It isnt even in device manager. It's like it wasnt even there, and i used it last week. Do you know what may have caused this. I also have a dvd driver but it is still working . that driver is under F:\ but my cd dvd driver was under G:\ and is now missing. Can someone help me?

I have rebotted and it does have power. when i put a cd in it the light goes on but thats it. the computer doesnt read the cd dvd drive. last week my friend who works in pc repair was installing a new c drive. played with jumpers, looked at BIOS and that was it. Now my drive is missing. does that have something to do with it?

While using the computer, you may have accidentally disabled the driver or deleted it. The main question is did this drive come with the PC or did you buy it extra? If it came with the PC,and you dont have the driver in a disk, right click My Computer and click properties. Go to the Hardware Profiles tab and see if you can find the drive. If you do, see if you can install the driver from there. If the drive is bought and added on, try re-installing the driver through Add/Remove Hardware with your CD. If none of these methods work, turn off your PC, unplug drive, and plug it in 20 seconds later. Now restart the PC and hopefully a message will appear showing a new hardware is found.

If your friend was playing with the bios, he may have disabled the drive. Upon startup of your PC, enter Setup (usually pressing DEL) and check to see all of your drives are present. If that doesnt work as well, try a system restore for a time you had it, (this is however annoying if you did other system changes.).

Hmmmmmm the drivers should be there - You didn't tell us what OS you're on. If 98 or 95, you will have trouble installing drivers - they are a dog to do sometimes. If XP it should just find them. I am not good with 2000 but I understand it's only an update of 98.
On the other hand, it sure can't be a Mac, because they never have these problems.
Ok, I'll presume you're on XP. Do this - go to My Computer , R Click , choose properties, go to the hardware tab, and and go to device manager. R click the top most icon in the list and click on "scan for hardware changes." If it still doesn't appear, you should open the box and double and triple check that the cables are ALL plugged in at both ends. Power, IDE, and sound. Does the light come on ? Does the drawer open? These are all hints. Try another cable. Unplug all the cables to the drive ON PURPOSE, turn it on, then off again , the replug it all and turn it on yet again- does it find the CD drive?
Good luck and keep at it.

TOM G!Win2k is not an update of 98 its a "finished" version of WinME they were working on Win2k and were forced to realese the OS but instead made it WINME so then later they realed WIN2K Xp is based on WIn2K's solid foundation OH YAH ! boot up in safemode not safemode but directory services restore mode press F8 continuasly when pc is botting a screen will pop up and click down to directory seervices restore mode it wored for me the smae thing happened if not try installing new hardware go start\settings\controlpanel\add/removehardware and yah if not u can try seraching the web for cd/dvd driver for windows xp oh and if nothing works make sure your friend has the jummpers setupright inthat back and make sure he actually plugged it into the ide port and to make sure that the bios detects it if still nothing works ask him to open ur pc and take off the ide cable off and let winodws startup without it then once winodws has finished staring up desktop loaerd tell him to plug inm the ide cable to thecd/dvd drive WHILe the computer is on then maybe windows will detect it and install or try adding romving hardware under control panel i did all these and every way worked for me cheers!!

You may want to go back into your bios and make sure that your "repaiman" friend didn't mistakenly disable it there which would have the effect of making windows blind to it and therefore windows would not install drivers for it. At the same time when booting, the lights will come on and everything just like its still enabled.

There are a couple of possibilities

1) both the hard drive and the optical drive are using the same controller. most drives will not operate this way. always connect hard drives to the primary controller and optical drives to the secondary controller

2) the optical drive has a switch or jumper that tells it the channel it is connected to: master or slave. make sure that the switch setting matches the connection (preferably master)
