Sometimes it's just too much to stay friends with one of these. Sad to say, but trying to be friends with a needy depressive might be a contradiction in terms, especially after wow, giving it 10 years. I'd say lose him/her. These types of people are emotional vampires and hey, they're never "there" for anyone else--they're not there for themselves. Sad. True.

Maybe you can stay friends but take a min-vacation from him/her. Tell him/her you've got a lot on your plate right now and as soon as things let up you'll be back in touch. In order for you to continue to be a good friend you may need to take some down-time for yourself. After 10 years you deserve it.

Has there been no progress on fixing the depression?
I know it can be really hard for friends if someone is depressed, but please consider everything carefully before you give up on the friendship.

i ve been in your position. it s hard. i know. i think it s great you ve stuck by ur "friend" but sometimes enough is enough. dont be so "there" all the time. gradually try to grow apart. if it s really buggin u... talk yo ur friend. calmly. tell her/him how u feel.
