This automobile would need to have seats that would allow the driver to sit comfortably without worrying whether or not their shoulders were wider than the seats. Have sat in a Toyota Avalon XLS and that was ok but was wondering if there were any others out there. Anyone else have this same problem?

Well I am 6' 6" with a 48" chest and, I suppose reasonably broad shoulders. I agree with the one post that Cadillac has some models with ample shoulder room. I would have thought the Deville myself, over the STS. The Lincoln Town Car is also quite good. I drive a Jaguar XK8 which is surprising roomy, as is my wife's Jag Vanden Plas. However, my elder brother, who is about my size, is an Audi fan, and his A8 is very comfortable, as is his little Audi TT. Much to my surprise, the Mini Cooper is a good bit bigger inside than you might think as well.

Try HYUNDAI GETZ.
It's the most spacious car and should address your problem. I place it in mini SUV category and it has both Petrol & Diesel version available. However, I am not sure if you are concerned with a big boot, as this car is a hatch-back.
