There is no period after the middle initial S, it should read
Harry S Truman was a great president.
The S did not stand for anything, therefore it is not abbreviated and does not need a period.

He was a good president, not among the best. He did get his likeness on a dime though!
There are only 3 in the category of best and they are:
"In almost every survey of historians dating back to the 1940s, three presidents have emerged as supreme successes: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt. These were the men who guided the nation through what historians consider its greatest crises: the founding era after the ratification of the Constitution, the Civil War, and the Great Depression and Second World War." (From RS 999, May 4, 2006)
President doesn't need to be capitalized.
Do not capitalize titles when used alone, in place of a name. So president should be lower case unless followed by a name!

"Harry S. Truman" is not correct. Harry Truman's middle name was "S", and therefore there should not be a period after the "S", as it does not abbreviate a word.
