I want to pay for music legally but I want it on my hard drive not a portable device. I know (or think I know) that if you pay for Yahoo Music, Napter, or something else you have to use their system an, once you stop paying, you can no longer listen to the songs. Is this true and, if so, what site can offer what I want?

you can use any of the sites even if they are used to put music on a mp3 player.

Itunes, napster...any of them. You can burn them to a cd...you don't have to have an ipod to use those sites.
