I have found that in the past, loyalty to a company was repaid handsomely. Today it seems that loyalty is not rewarded at all and in fact companies at least appear to have no ethical problem whatsoever to lie to their staff about any number of things that affect their daily lives (things like the stability of the company, growth in revenue... etc).

What really do companies need to do, and what should we as staff truly expect?

Wow, Welcome to 2006. I have been there and done that.I have learned that my services and my loyalties are worth a great deal.Every job I have entered into has always come with a contract that I provide.If your prospective employer is honest and upfront they will have no problem in signing a contract that you compile after your initial interview and pre-hire stage.You ask the questions and take note of the answers. If they promise you a pay increase within a certain amount of time or they assure you that there Co. is making X amount of revenue or you have x amount of hours you have to work on salary etc etc ....You get it, Even if they have there own Co policies and contracts to sign, make sure you have your own. CYA( Cover Your As>} Rule of thumb for me. Hey they can only say " No" and if they do, there must be something there that they do not feel comfortable about, so who cares you wouldn't want to work for a Co like that anyways. To answer your question ...All companies are responsible to keep there promises to all employees. Do you have the money to take them to court if they don't? They have it for there defense!!!! CYA

What you need to do is start networking. Ninety percent of everything worthwhile is done by 10% of people. Everyone else are losers. Ten percenters band together and create informal, sometimes formal groups (example of a formal group is a small business or a limited liability partnership etc.)

Now, when it comes to companies. Most people absolutely must get in the habit of making lateral moves from company to company. Only move when you have a job already (never allow yourself to become unemployed). Constantly shop around for jobs when you have a job.

When asked, the answer is always the same. You love your job and the people you work with (try not to laugh...you are being diplomatic here) but you feel like you are ready for more responsibility and challenge. You couldn't see yourself leaving your old job for anything less than a 10% raise. And, by the way, you prefer salary as cash (not worthless company benefits).

Keep doing this until your salary is in the $60,000 to $100,000 range. When you are in this range, you are looking for something specific. And that something specific is "the group". The group has an alpha male, the most important member. He is a star player in a corporation. Brilliant, vicious and extremely loyal to his group (not to the company though). He builds his team from the best and he is looking for YOU. If you are a loser, he will axe you without a second thought. He also plays rough with other competing groups. To be blunt, he is going places and you are the vehicle he is driving to get there. The other side of that coin is he is taking you with him. Once you join "the group", you start doing all the important, high profile work at your company. The higher your leader climbs, the more important the work. Often, the leader will switch companies, especially when he is high level. You ALWAYS go with him. You have no loyalty to the company...absolutely none and neither does your leader or any other member of "the group". But, they are fiercely loyal to each other and to the leader and he is loyal to you. The company is deeply dysfunctional, even evil. The group, however, is highly competent and caring of each other.

That is the way it is done these days.

There's no loyalty from the employees as well. Now employees start finding job when they got one. Who wait until the company get troubles and become unemployed. The employer have no choice to cheat on number of things to keep those people thinking they are safe and so they won't rush to find a new place.

Companies are responsible to the stock holder ONLY. Employees are expendable. If you want to stop that, join or start a Union. Under a union's protection, you have a contract on how you will be treated, your rights, your pay, etc.

not even a union can guarentee job security, ppl. lose jobs everyday that are in unions..how many union workers do you hear about that work years without a contract...bottom line is that nothing in life is a guarentee,...ive been through this several times..a union contract only means to get a raise employees are always forced to give something up in return

not anymore, all about profit, they dont feel they need to keep their employees happy to acclomplish this.
