I'm in school and my major right now is business administration. i would like to work at an advertisement agency. the school i goto doesn't have strictly advertisement or marketing. my question is when i graduate, is my degree going to help me still with what I'd like to do? Or do I need to change my major? what are advertisement agencies looking for?

I goto a private school in Kansas. I can get an emphasis in marketing, which is what i'm doing right now as well. But sometimes, they will let people create their own major, i suppose. they know what i want to do. but it still concerns me. I guess i also wonder am I going to need more school after my four years at this school? does having a masters really going to help my chances?

I'm not surprised that there is no degree in advertising, but I'll bet there is something like marketing. In the business school, it may fall under PR/Corporate Communications; or in the school of communications, there could be any number of possibilities.

I'd take a very close look at the communications programs/classes. You probably will need to change your major, or consider a Communications/Business double major. A degree like that could be useful, but the other thing you'll want to do as soon as you have a little coursework under your belt is look for an internship. Do as many of those as you can! In advertising, it very often is who you know as much as what you know.

Good luck.

Change to marketing/advertising. Advertising isn't business adminstration. Don't waste 3 years on wrong subject. I would advise to also go to a careers advisor.

Your future is much more important than people here answering this question. Good one in trying to find out but I will still, after answering your question get some professional advise.

They are looking for a portfolio and a innovative imagination. You build this portfolio from the projects in your major aka Advertising. If they don't have advertising try a Communications major they have classes on marketing and ad worked in. Plus it exposes you to TV, Radio, web design and print crucial knowledge for ad work.

Ad agencies are very difficult to get into. Having a summer internship at one is a great way to get your foot into one when you graduate.

What college doesn't have a marketing degree? I already think that get getting a regular business admin degree is not really worth it, and if your school doesn't have a basic major such as marketing you might want to think about switching colleges, since it sounds like either your college is not legit or your college is not very established in which companies might not even bother to look into hire college grads from your college.

What do you want to do at an advertising agency? You could design ads, you could be a copywriter, you could do webpages...there are lots of things. If you want to be a designer, you need a portfolio. If you want to be a copywriter, practice writing copy like what you see in print ads, start noticing what buzz words are out there on commercials and in print.

You should worry more about getting experience in such a firm rather than your degree. If you have experience, they will like you more.
