I have a 1992 Toyota corolla with a bad engine 4A-FE, the mechanic said he had a fully rebuilt engine on the shelf, better than rebuilding mine, I took the deal, when I got the car back, oil light keeps coming on at idle speed , car always running hot, when I open the oil cap on the head cover with engine running lots of air pressure comes out, I doubt that he only did a head job only on my old engine. How can I find out the block number on my old engine to compare it to the number on block on the car now? is there a data base or something where by the VIN # I can find out ?

Well there is carfax.com, but they won't have the casting number for the block. They deal more with DMV and accidents.
With oil light at idle, your probably losing your oil pump, witht he car runnig hot, you either have a bad thermostat, bad water pump, or a blocked radiator. When you open the oil fill cap, do you see alot of smoke? The pressure is normal, seeing smoke is not, its called blow by, cause there is a bad ring(s) or cracked piston. Unless you wrote the number prior to the swap, all you will ever find is what kind of engine should be in it, and there is a date code, but all engines of that year will have that code. You can go to the shop and ask him if the engine is still there, but I guess that won't help much. I would tell him you want the engine rebuilt, or you will sue him, turn him in to the better business bureau, and pretty much shut down his business.

All this information sounds correct to me. I would say take the mechanic to court if you have your paperwork to back up what you are saying. Check your auto body vin number againt the motor block vin number or have a trusted mechanic or friend do it for you. If it is different you may not have a case, if it is the same you do have a case.

Maybe in the title and registration? I would take this guy to civil court. Try taking the motor to another mechanic to check if the vin # is the same as the block. Maybe the other mechanic can tell if its the same block you had and if it has been replaced.

Take the serial number off of the block and have a manufacturer run the number. Also, if it is a new or re-man motor, there should be a tag on it stating so.

sounds like he took you for a ride. 99.9% of mechanics don't keep complete engines on their shelves. too costly.if you are having that many problems with the new engine, you should have taken it back to him immediately. is there a warranty with the new engine? if so, then he must honor it. otherwise you will have to take him to court.

Sounds like he did a terrible job either way. Did you get the work done in writing? Because if you didn't, It really doesn't matter what the mechanic did.
