We rent a small apartment in Miami with a tiny bedroom. It's HOT outside right now, probably 90 degrees at night.
Since it started getting hot out, our window A/C unit can't cool off the room.
It freezes on the inside, ice blocks the vents, no cold air comes out. Then, suddenly, you'll hear the loud *** noise of ice shooting right out of the vents. Naturally, the only way to unfreeze it is to turn it off, so the ice defrosts and then drips everywhere.
All the while, the room has never become remotely cool.

Anyone have a solution other than calling the landlord? I've already left a message but we all know how long THAT could take...

Shut it off, clean filter. After ice melts need to tilt the A/C unit back so when it runs the water runs out the back and not in the front where it freezes.

Ice means that your air conditioner has been working too hard and has frozen over. This is most likely to running it at least 15 degrees colder than the air outside the apartment. The only cure is to leave it off for a couple of hours and let it thaw out.

A significant amount of ice may mean the air conditioner is not draining properly. I would call maintenance and have them check that out.

Good luck!

Try not cranking it all the way up for long periods of time. AC units are not designed to run at full capacity for long periods of time.

Call your land lord.

Also, turn it up high once it defrosts, then once your apt gets to the desired temp, turn it down a bit so that it maintains the coolness. Use regular fans, that will also help to keep the room cool.

get a good timer like you would use if you were on vacation and plug your ac unit into it - so that it runs for 45 mins then has 15 mins to cool/warm before it turns back on again - also make sure the drain on the outside of the unit is not clogged - and that the outside it even with/lower then the outside - they water should be dripping out the outside - if it cannot drip out it will build up inside

Ours would do that when it was really hot outside and we had it going constantly. Turning it off was all we could do.
you can buy a new one for under $100 bucks. Keep the receipt so you can take it with you when you go. When you finally do hear from the landlord let him know you replaced it and will take it when you move.

Make sure that the ac unit is tilted slightly back... What is happening is the condensation tray is filling up with water and the ac unit is freezing it... so norally letting it heat up and drain off then leaning the unit back instead of having it sit level will stop this from happening.

Maybe turn it doen a bit so it doesn't make ice. Or, get some good beer to put in front of it to chill. Or, get a new Ac for $80 or so. It would be quieter , more efficient and weigh less.

We drilled a couple of holes in the bottom of our ac once because of that. I would also turn it too ac then fan.
