Sometimes I feel like people pay a lot more attention to race in the US and in the UK people are some how more layed back.

The US has the worst racism on the planet because this country was founded on, by and for racism.

"skinhead 4 life". Says it all really. I find it amazing that people like you still exist.

Mankind aren't dogs. And actually a Chihuahua should get exactly the same treatment as a St Bernard. Why not? And why shouldn't they have get-togethers and barbecues. I'm sure they do. And get on famously.

In answer to the question though, I live in the UK, and can say it's a lot more usual to see 'a person of ethnic background' on a daily basis. Races have got together, and mixed race children are now growing up here, and inter-racial couples are now not so unusual. I think there is more tolerance because we're more used to seeing it.

You can get some people in communities in America who don't get to see past the next nearest shopping mall where the only non-whites are collecting trolleys or cleaning toilets, it's no wonder that so many have the wrong idea. Acceptance of ALL minority groups is harder in America as there are still so many 'sheltered' people with quite fixed views.

I can't speak for the US as I've never really had the desire to go there (maybe I shouldn't believe what I'm told about it and its prejudices but tthere's usually no smoke without fire), but here in my small UK town I have an African housemate. She's a nurse at our cottage hospital and loved by all the elderly patients she cares for. She was one of the first black people in the town and she's very popular at church and with the locals generally, and has been asked to speak about her country at the junior school morning assembly. I may be wrong but I can't somehow see that happening in the US.

Also my sister is married to a Malaysian and their son is perfectly well accepted as just a 10 year old boy, they've not had any problems from anyone either with him or their interracial marriage because on the whole we tend to see the person rather than the colour.

There's no denying there are pockets of racism in UK but they're small in relation to the overall population and usually created by the educationally deprived.

The UK is recognised Worldwide as one of the most racially tolerant nations. That means its people are very conscious of racial issues, but it doesn't mean they're not racist. Instead, they keep their racist tendencies to themselves most of the time and they recognise what racism is. This is partly because successive governments over many years have put great emphasis on ensuring racial and cultural integration.

America is quite different in this respect. It is extraordinarily and sometimes shockingly racist. Interestingly, Americans as individuals don't realise they're racist and would be shocked to be called so, yet in the same breath will speak of rednecks and wetbacks, towel-heads etc. They're completely paranoid about immigration and they're intolerant of other countries cultures and views.

The recent Mexican immigration issue, the response and attitudes to the suffering caused by Katrina and Iraq have all served to demonstrate this powerfully.

Many individuals and 'gangs' in both UK and US still habour a level of intollerance towards different cultures.
However based on the outcome of the hurricains that hit the South coast of the America within the last couple of years where the US government left so many blacks without assistance for weeks I would imagine that the US government still has someway to go over this issue.
I believe that we Brits have more compassion and regard for human suffering and would never have accepted that here.
Lets face it we all bleed red!!

Race is the ultimate human devider. Saying all races are equal is like saying a St. Bernard is equal to a Chiwawa. Why do you think the political and social situation in the US is getting worse and worse every year? Illegal immigration, race mixing, ect. The more people deny it, the worse it will get.

There is a lot more intermingling in the UK as compared to the US. Where in the US it is not unusual to have segregated neighbourhoods, which is not the case so much in the UK. You are more likely to live in close quarters with people of different ethnic backgrounds and your children are more likely to play together in the UK.

No, we just have the media to hype of every racist action. I'm sure racism is equal around the world like it is in the US because it's not a county that creates racism, it's the people within it.

I don't know. They make a big deal out of it here. I saw just yesterday a program on tv how it is allowed in soccer. There is no particular laws against it in Europe and it is just now that the people who govern how soccer is played have come to consider it as a serious problem.
It doesn't matter to me as people who hate will always find someone to hate who cannot defend themselves -- proabally it is going to be people who are suspected of child abuse or molestation. The homeless are another target of hate. So race isn't a big deal to me. Everybody will just agree on the people who we will all hate and that will be that.

The racism in the US is everywhere - it's insidious.
Even on here, people will mention their race - as if it matters in some way.

Look at US TV - think when you last saw an inter-racial relationship.
Look at the police shows - what race are most of the 'criminals'?
