In France:
Paris:
- Apart from the requisite Eiffel tower visit...
- Gotta do the Louvre - there's just nothing else to compare it to
- River boat cruise on the Seine - Touristy, but definitely a lovely way to see the city
- Champs-Elysées; Get a feel of what modern Paris city consumerism is like. Good people watching from the many sidewalk cafes.
- If you're into history or that sort of thing, see the Palace of Versailles. You can almost hear Robin Leach echoing through the halls about the lifestyles of the aristocracy.
- Cruise the cobblestone streets of Montmartre & the Latin Quarter - funkiest architecture in Paris, and that Bohemian feel of "Moulin Rouge"
- Take the Metro everywhere you can... Parisianne cabbies can rip you off almost better than New York taxis.
- If he can afford the one, great, Parisianne dinner, Julien is a great place to go... classic architecture, American-friendly, just what you'd picture about going to a nice Paris restaurant. Probably in the range of $50-$60 per person, not counting the wine.
In Nice/Cannes:
- Best cheap way to get there is take the bullet train from Paris. Rent a car in Nice (I used Easy Car a couple of years ago), since stuff is more spread out here.
- Go to Anitbe - check out the Picasso museum! It's an old home/studio of his overlooking the ocean
- If you're there on a weekend, just a couple of blocks away in the town market square is a great town Market. All kinds of cool vendors - lots of local artists. (BTW - AWESOME Olive store just about the middle of the square on the inland side... big open bins, plenty of free samples)
- In Cannes proper - You must go have a simple French breakfast of croissants & coffee on the terrace at the Carlton Hotel. It's overlooking the beach, and best served with fantasies about the opening of your latest film at the festival.
- Check out the beach at St. Tropez. Little bit of a drive out of town, but much more comfortable than the beach in Cannes I thought.
- Do the :45 drive south to Monaco. Live out James Bondian fantasies. GREAT Jazz clubs down in the waterfront area just south of the Casino. Park & walk around - You'll feel the like French Quarter of New Orleans got a major upgrade, with no stupid drunks staggering around.

The only place in Gemany I've been to is Munich. Nice city, the English Gardens are gorgeous but certain areas are, err, nude areas, so be careful. We unexpectedly walked into one. Find out which are the safe paths, wander around admiring everything, and make your way to the center for outdoor music (not sure if that's done all the time) and the best beer I've tasted anywhere.
France - Paris, obviously, if you like big cities and lots of art and such. I honestly skipped it. Orleans is a lovely smaller town to spend a day in. We went there because of Joan of Arc, but it's worth seeing either way if you want a smaller and more relaxing atmosphere. Solemes is also very beautiful. I've heard great things about Mont St. Micheal, but never been there...
Austria - Vienna, if you want any sort of museum, or to see the palaces and a lot of historical areas. Salzburg is great too but -don't- just go to see the Sound of Music areas. Get out to the edges of the city. Gaming (pronounced G-ah-ming, not gaming as in playing games..) is a small town a bit south of Vienna, and would make a side trip - I lived there for a few months and loved it. Very small town, but visit a local restraunt or two for meals, see the Kartuase (an old monastery - in fact, try the restraunt that's there), and enjoy the scenery. There are TONS of hiking trails in the area including a waterfall and a cave.
