A business usually hires a consulting firm to do odd jobs for them. It could be a one day project that is basically crap work, or it could be a multi-million dollar project that lasts for years.

Some firms just do one area like "computer consulting" or "financial services consulting".

A consulting firm or consultant will normally work for a company as an outside adviser. This type of professional is suppose to be the best in his line of work and will be able to steer a company over an insurmountable problem.

Consulting firms can be anything you want them to be. Friends of mine work for an Automobile manufacturing consulting firm. It can be quite lucrative if you have the right education, experience, and sales pitch.
