Plug all your computer equipment into a surge protective power bar...although very rare...it is known to happen
But to keep your system running should the power go out...install a generator to your power fuse panel.

I recommend purchasing a Surge Protector. Basically it's a power outlet you plug your electrical devices in (computer and monitor). They also sell some that protect your modem by simply plugging the phone line into the Surge Protector itself.
This is the cheaper route by the way. Otherwise you can invest in a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). They're more expensive and they usually come with battery back-up should you lose power to your residence/place of business.

Buy a UPS. But note that most UPS devices have the same $10~$30 surge protector in it that you can buy off the shelf at any store that sells any electrical device. UPS devices don't give you much more surge protection but they do give you 10 to 30 minutes of power backup so you can save your data and shut down, that's all it does. If you are looking for something that lasts longer you will have to invest in a generator.
If you are interested you can find some great UPS devices over here, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=SubCatDeals&SubCategory=72

Use a surge protector. I always unplug my dial or DSL modem during bad lighting storms just in case a surge goes through. FYI if you ever have to do internal work on your computer, make sure you avoid static charge i.e. carpeted areas... etc. Make sure you are grounded to the case. That covers most of it unless your doing something not suppose too.
