The pain was extreme and felt like lots of needles pricking my skin just above my nose and right eye. Any ideas?

I'm no Doctor, so take this with a grain of salt, but the same thing happened to me on two flights. During the descent the pressure in the sinuses changes, and if the sinuses are full it can cause a really painful experience. My solution to this was to take a decongestant pill such as "Contac" about an hour before the flight. That dries up the sinuses and prevents the congestion during flights. Good luck.

Sinus congestion. The air trapped in your sinuses, particularly the right one, contracted as the cabin pressure increased, but no extra air could enter the sinuses to equalize the pressure. That could have been the cause. Did you have a cold or a sinus infection at the time?

Yep, sinus issues- feels like your head is in a vice.

I would check with a Dr cuz sinus infections can get pretty gross, if that is what it is. Otherwise I suppose it could be any sinus congestions - allergies, cold, etc.
