When I open a new window , I can't type anything in the search broswer, but instead my typed words appear at the bottom of the screen in a "Find" text box. The only way I can clear this is to go into Clear Private Data field and clear everything. Is there anyway to fix this?

What version of Mozilla do you have? They have something called bugzilla where they find known problems and they have patches and updates. Go to HELP and then ABOUT MOZILLA and let me know what version you have.
Go to Edit then PREFERENCES and then click on ADVANCED and then Click on Keyboard and Navigation. Do you see a checkbox for "Find automatically when typing within a page"...try unchecking that option and tell me if that works out.

May be your Mozilla get corrupted. Try the above answer first. If still not working, re-install your Mozilla.
