I don't think he was "tonto" at all.
He just didn't speak English properly.
Just think, who was the one who could track people, who could find the way to go, hear if someone was approaching...?
I think the Lone Ranger wouldn't have lasted for one episode if it hadn't been for Tonto.
I guess that the people who gave him that name didn't know the meaning of the word, they just thought it sounded Native American.
Or, they were just being very racist.
He should have been called, Listo, or Sabio, or "El que sabe todo".
I think that in Spain he was called "Toro salvaje" or something like it, nothing to do with tonto.

I like Mrs. Codrocks answer, I think that Tonto wasn't as silly as the Lone Ranger, I also think Trigger wasn't as silly as the Lone Ranger either.

They both were especially if you think that Tonto always called The Lone Ranger "Kimozabe" please forgive the spelling. If this word is analysed it has three syllables "Ki" "mo" and "zabe". Or Que no sabe. This is Spanish for "He doesn't know". So who's really stoopid?
