The best all around trumpet player is probably Arturo Sandoval.
Maynard Ferguson is in his mid-70s and has emphysema so he can't play like he used to, but he deserves credit for his past work.
Jon Faddis is an amazing player, but he's a jerk.
Allen Vizzutti is an amazing player of both classical and jazz. He also writes and teaches. If you're a beginning or intermediate player, get his method books.
Wynton Marsalis is overrated and doesn't think white folks should be allowed to play jazz.
Christopher Martin of the Chicago Symphony is probably the best pure classical trumpet.
Doc Severinsen from Johnny Carson's Tonight Show still sounds good even though he's pushing 80.

Maynard Ferguson, I would say.
Personally, I don't listen for trumpet players but I had a friend once who was NUTS about him. I think he plays jazz.

George Rabbai. Used to play for the Woody Herman band. He's recognized overseas, but not in his own country. GO figure. Check out his CD - Lemon Drop (www.half.com). He's also a magnificent scat singer.
