There are a lot more extensions than just com and org. You can generally get any extension you want, but com seems to be the most costly to get that domain ending and its the most familiar. For example, if I wanted to go to best buy's website, my first instinct would be to type bestbuy.com. I wouldnt type bestbuy.org since org usually associates with non-profit organizations. I know RED CROSS exists, but my first instinct would be to go to redcross.org and not redcross.com. Its just how we used them in the past and so we are accustomed to it.

You can get any extension you want...is the bottom line. But if you want people to actually find your web address and if you want them to feel more comfortable with going to your site, then your best bet would be to use .com. If you use a weird extension, most people affiliate that with a phishing site and tends to stay away from it.

To make a long story short, one company controls all the .com names. Yes, you can host from your own computer. Just don't use a URL. Just use your IP address. If you don't have a static IP address, tell your ISP you want one. If they let you have one, they'll probably charge you an extra ten dollars per month.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which is a a non-profit organization based in the US manages and appoints domains. Domains are needed to direct traffic to the server your website is located on. So in otherwords, without them, no user could ever reach their intended destination and the internet would cease to function.

.com, .org, and .net, though the three most popular, are only a few of those suffixes available. .biz, .info, and .name are starting to catch on. There are also specialty suffixes such as .pro or .aero, as well as hundreds of national ones such as .ca (Canada) and .us (United States). While ICANN is the central management, domain registration is handled by approved registrars.

You can host a website off of your home computer, but you still need a domain to redirect to your website. Comcast hosts data on professional servers in high end datacenters designed for website hosting. If you wish to host a site on your own computer, remember that your current internet connection will most likely not suffice and that a stong knowledge of technology is needed. I would recommend instead getting an affordable hosting solution if you want a website. While it is true that there are many free services, they have smaller limits, stricter TOS, and often times forced ads.

Some cheap hosts that I like to use are:

http://www.servage.net/
http://www.servertweak.com/
http://www.site5.com/
Obviously there are other hosts. Some offer more space and bandwidth for their price, but you should be weary, as most generous hosts (the above excluded) end up overselling, thus ripping you off in the end.

Now, you'll still need a domain. So a few decent registrars to try are:

the domain names (.com, .org, etc) are centrally registered and you must pay to have a name registered. You can then host the name wherever you want.

that's the way the government made it...that's the way the sites r identified...they need to know if it's a non-profit organization (org), a profit orginization (com), a government organization (gov), etc.

And how would you get your site into the Internet 'Cloud?" You are not directly connnected to the cloud. Even a T-1 line is not a direct connection.
And, if you didn't have your site registered, how would it be found by address...which it wouldn't have without the registration. ????
