in reality there are several technical differences, but what matters to you is that DSL comes trough the phone line, therefore, if you do not have a contract with the phone company, you cannont have DSL, while cables, well... it comes trought the cable company, and you CAN have internet without having to have a contract or cable TV, so... to have cable internet you wouldn't have to cancel your contract with the dish company...

Also, cable is more expensive... and finally.... DSL software... messes up computers... while cable internet do not need any extra software, just windows.

and more, depending on the price of the different packages...

Price!!!! Cable can be faster in some cases, but there are so many _dsl's that that is a study all in it's self. The mergers are kicking the prices down on dsl and some cable co's are getting the message, but we still are getting screwed in the USA compared to any other country on the planet.
The only other difference is, cable comes in on a coax cable from the cable co. and dsl comes in on a land line tellco wire.

velocity (benefit - Cable): Cable boasts swifter velocity than DSL internet in concept. even however, cable does not constantly supply on the promise in primary useful use. most of the modifications between DSL and cable modem originate no longer with the technologies itself yet truly with the provider service. All different issues being equivalent, factors like value, reliability and high quality of shopper provider for setting up and maintenance subjects can variety critically from one service to the subsequent.

DSL is over phone lines. It is fast but cable is faster. Cable is over cable tv lines. DSL is better than dial-up, but Cable is the best. However usually cable is a little more expensive compared to DSL.

DSL is through your landline or phone line.

Cable is through your cable network.

Cable is much faster than DSL for download and connection speed. If your phone line goes down, so does your DSL. If your power goes out, so does your cable.

Both use modems, however, DSL works off the phone line and will allow up to 1.5Mbps of download data transfer. Cable works off of cable TV lines and tends to be faster. My current speed is 7Mbps.
