(Quoted)
Racism refers to various belief systems maintaining that humans can be separated into various groups based on physical attributes and that these groupings determine or influence cultural or individual achievement or the essential value of human beings. The word "racism" itself appeared in the 1930s, both in the English language and in French. This can lead to hostility against individuals based on a perceived or ascribed "race". Racism often includes the belief that people of different races differ in aptitudes and abilities, such as intelligence, physical prowess, or virtue. Most individuals who use the concept of racial categories believe that different races can be placed on a ranked, hierarchical scale. By definition one who practices racism is known as a racist.

Although anti-Semitism has a long European history, racism itself is a modern phenomenon. In the view of Michel Foucault, the first formulation of racism emerged in the Middle Ages as the "discourse of race struggle", a historical and political discourse which Foucault opposed to the philosophical and juridical discourse of sovereignty.[1] According to Foucault, this first appearance of racism as a theoretical discourse (as opposed to simple xenophobia, which some might argue has existed in all places and times) may be found during the 1688 Glorious Revolution in Great Britain, in Edward Coke or John Lilburne's work.

Racism, doctrine, belief, or assumption that inherited biological differences cause some human subpopulations to be fundamentally different from, or superior to, others. In this sense, racism originated in the mid-19th century, although evidence of racial discrimination can be detected in much earlier historical periods.

By the beginning of the 20th century there were frequent discussions of the “race problem”, meaning the social and political consequences of biological differences between human groups. By the end of the 20th century an equally general view was that the “problem” was not race but racism, meaning both the prevalence of racist doctrine and the practice of racial discrimination. Only a historical account can explain the many senses in which the words “race” and “racism” have been used.

A whole host of factors both past and present have caused it. I think however that the most prominent one is ignorance which leads to assumptions and stereotypes of the other. With this ignorance comes suspicions which transcend into every area of daily life, creating the belief that one group is out to get the other. I thing everything else stems from this.
