CD is read, but when I double-click on SETUP.EXE, I get "setup.exe-Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly (Oxc0000005).Click on OK to terminate the app." Can't even run Win XP CD to refresh the installation--I get the same error. Same result on any installation disc. Forget virus and spyware problems--I've updated and run all the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and the PC is clean. Everything else is working fine. CD drive plays music, reads and writes data.

It might be a problem with Windows Installer.
Go to Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall Windows Installer 3.0
Then click on:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en
and download Windows Installer from there and Install it. Then restart your computer and try to install the programs.

Okay, something is running in the background and causing problems. What you have to do is hit ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager, and go over to processes. You have to force quit pretty much all of em (things marked under user namer as system can stay running) and see if you can install then. Typically this happens if you have a piece of spyware or buggy software running.

Getting the 0xc000.... error is quite common when there's problems with Windows itself. It was suggested before my answer there to uninstall the Windows Installer and reinstall it. I agree with that statement. If that doesn't work for you, try uninstalling the drive itself and reinstalling. If that doesn't work, then you're probably faced with wiping your drive and reinstalling Windows (especially if it cannot read the XP CD as it is).

Okay, did you try to restart? I get the same error after my computer is on for extended periods of time, and restarting works.
