I don't think it's possible, because I've been trying to do so for a while and I could not find a way to do so other than completely deleting your account (including email, IM, etc...). The easiest way is to just not use Yahoo Answers.

As they mentioned above, all you have to do is stop using it. Once all the questions you have answered have been resolved, you will no longer receive any notification emails for them.
You can also click on "My Q&A" in the upper right of this page and then on "Edit My Info" to remove your avatar and contact options so your answers which get archived here will not be associated with you.
If you'd like, you can still delete your answers to all open questions, but the askers might be very disappointed. :(

As you do not join, there is nothing to cancel. Just stop using it.
