The pawn is the correct answer.
Once it reaches the 8th rank, it can be promoted to any piece of the same color, with the exception of a King. You can promote it to a Queen, Rook, Bishop or Knight...
Normally, a Queen is chosen, as it is the most powerful piece on the board. There are only two reasons to promote to another piece...
You might consider promoting to a Knight if the promotion would lead to a game-winning fork.
You might consider a Rook or Bishop if promoting to a Queen would lead to an immediate stalemate.

It would be the pawns.
Once the pawns get to the opponents' last rank, u can promote him to any piece in the game, with the exception of king and the pawn itself. Usually players will choose a queen, but sometimes, you will find promoting a knight or other pieces better.
1) Queen , most effective, but watch out for stalemates, if ur queen will give a stalement, use other pieces
2) rook, second option, the only reason u would want to promot a rook is because u try to save the opponent's face, since rook and queen are basicallty the same
3) knights, usually u would promote a knight to get a fork, usually winning an opponents queen. So, ur basically trading ur potential queen for his/hers.
4) Bishops, also used for pins and screwers, pretty much all that there is. Trading a potential queen for the screwered/pinned piece.
* Always remember, sometimes we promote the pieces because certain can give checkmate, like a knight for example, since he is the most elusive one. Before promoting anything, look forward to see if it can cause a checkmate or stalemate. ALWAYS

the pawn. it can turn into any piece once it crosses the board, even if that piece already exists. for example, it is possible for a player to have two queens at once.
it's a tricky maneuver, with a big payoff if it works out.
