Well, always make sure you have sunblock on because it blocks the UVA/UVB rays, which cause cancer. Anyways, it really varies depending on your current skin color. But if you were light, make sure you don't stay out too long, because your natural SPF isn't so much. But if you do it shouldn't take that long, for medium skinned, I'd say maybe an hour or so. And for really dark skin, it'd be really hard, because people with dark skin have an SPF of like 500 i think. So if you do, don't stay out too long.
And I'm not sure about brands, especially with that whole recent lawsuit going on. But my friends like Hawaiian tropics, and i like Coppertone (both were part of that lawsuit).

Without taking in consideration the other who spoke on cancer,i think firstly that suntan would make you look gorgeous and second you get a better tanning under your umbrella....

it depends on how fast you tan. it's different for everyone but for me it takes about 30 mins with suntan lotion

I don't think you should lay out cuz u'll get skin cancer later in life and you don't want tthat! I use this lotion called firming sun and it works, i get a little natural sun, but never too much!
