Dizzy Dean, no contest. I had the good fortune to hear him once, when he was invited into the booth as a guest back in the late 60's when ABC tried baseball broadcasts. (The worst? Howard Cosell. Great for boxing and certain other sports, Cosell couldn't call a baseball game to save his life.) And I hate to burst the bubble of Vin Scully fans, but he always nauseated me.

Jack Buck. The man was incredible. He had an awesome voice and people simply adored him. Most announcers have only one famous call that they are remembered for. Jack Buck has two.

1) 1987 playoffs when Ozzie Smith hit his first ever home run from the left side of the plate. It was a walk-off, and Jack Buck just said, "Go crazy folks, go crazy."

2) The most famous call in baseball history in my opinion. You all know the scenario. Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Kirk Gibson and Eyck going head to head. Gibby hits the improbable home run, and Buck in his greatness yells, "This is going to be a home run, unbelievable. I don't believe what I just saw."

If you want longevity, my opinion is Vin Scully.....ever notice that he can call play by plays solo? He definitely knows the history of the game as well as the bios and interesting facts about the Dodger players and the ballplayers from opposing teams. He's got a story to tell about all of them. He is a one man show. Bob Costas and Joe Buck both could have great careers if you're looking down the road.

This is just my personal opinion, but I would have to say Vin Scully of the Los Angeles Dodgers. A great blend of calling the game and giving the human interest side of it as well. Nobody does it like Vin Scully.

Bob Uecker. Yes he was a terrible player, but no one can call a game better than him. He brings Brewers baseball to life for thousands of fans in Wisconsin driving without access to a TV. Calling a game over the radio is much more difficult than TV, and Uecker has mastered it.
