The cocky Italians thought this would be a walk in the park after the Americans got thumped by the Czech's. But the Americans played their hearts out and got a desperately needed point to keep their hopes alive. The Americans wanted it more than the Italians and now the Azzuri could be in a whole heap of trouble when they play a Czech team that has a lot to prove after losing to Ghana.
I'm not an American and I don't want to see them win. But they could go through to the next round with a win against Ghana and the Italians could be going home early if they lose to the Czech's.
It sets up an interesting final game for those 4 sides.
Too bad about Iran. They played some beautiful football. You should be more proud of their efforts than how the Italians will fair.

I hear a lot of sour grapes and excuses in the answers to this question. America Played there hearts out, they lost 2 players thanks to a moronic referee. But yet still played Italy(which is one of the greatest teams in the world) to a draw. Get over it and give my Americans the credit they deserve, they just wanted it more today than Italy did, by they way America is ranked 5th in the world, why is it so surprising they played so well? I think you all are nervous because America is becoming good in the only sport that the rest of the world is so fanatic about. But the bottom line is it's only a game. Good Luck to whatever country wins the cup.

Italy is also my fave team behind my country who was already eliminated. It was disappointing 'cause Italy can play much better. And they made a reckless and stupid mistake with that needless elbow and got a player kicked out. They could've used him to have a bigger advantage against the US. They should've won and it would've guaranteed them an advance to the next round. Now it's all up in the air 'till the last game. What if they get unlucky again or screw up again? They face elimination in the first round. That's embarrasing for Italy. And they play Czech Rep next which is a team I also like. But I must stick with Italy in the end. I hope they'll get their stuff together.

I think the reason why the Italians didn't win was because of an unfortunate tactical mistake, namely, the substitution of Francesco Totti. He was sacrificed for the more agressive Gattuso after the Italians were down to 10 men, because it was thought that Gattuso would work much harder and run much more than Totti when they were down a man.

However, the situation soon reversed itself, and the Italians found themselves enjoying a man-advantage. Unfortunately, the Italian attack lacked creativity in the second half. All they did was trying to drop balls behind the American defense, which created offside after offside, and their passes weren't clicking as well as we expected them to. The reason was the absence of their main playmaker Totti. Its just like Argentina without Requelme or Portugal without Deco.

It was a very unfortunate game for Italy. The move to bring off the creative Totti was a immature one, therefore, the lacklustre performance of the Italian offense wasn't much of a surprise. However, the coach shouldn't be blamed for this, because few would've predicted that the Americans would have 2 men sent off right after that.

Because the only goal America got was an own goal made by one of the guys on the Italian team. Plus, Italy was playing with ten men. Although USA had the same number...

It is sad !
Italy and Italians should be disappointed for the wrong choises of Marcello Lippi (the italian coach) that wasted (literarely) 3 substitutions ! The right man for the match would be Pippo Inzaghi but Lippi didn't let him play !

The referee scandalous behavior let the professional performances goes down for both teams ! The faults we have seen in the match was not so serious. Maybe one red card for De Rossi would be ok, but not the other two !

The italian way to play is been very bad because of the 11 offsides to 1, next time please LIPPI... teach our forwarders ho to play a little back !!!

Man of the match : Keller ?
Not for me, I would say Perrotta, that kept on playing also after he is been hitten.

Italy had one bad minute and two idiots were involved see my last question about the matter. If this minute (27th) didn't happen I would say 2-0 Italy easy the other 89+ minutes were not bad.

Sorry but it was my team Portugal that booted your team Iran out of the tourney. Sorry about that.

Lippi should be fired for poor selection of the team and even worse substitiutions. Why were players like Zaccardo, de rossi and Perrota playing instead of materazzi, camoranesi and should have started with Gattuso.

In attack, instead of starting with Luca Toni, they should have with Del Pierro and should have brought on Inzaghi.

Italy was far too uncreative when attacking with only playing balls into the penalty area instead of attacking from the flanks.

By the way I am not Italian nor do I fancy them to win the World Cup.
