I know hardly anything about Soccer or the rules of the game, but I noticed the USA team got a draw with Italy in their last match. I notice the Czechs and Italy play each other for their next game. If Italy wins and the US wins, it would put the US a point ahaid of the Czech Republic and they would move on.

However, the thing that confuses me is if there is a draw and the US wins. The US would be tied with the Czech Republic. Italy could possibly lose their match, with the US winning theirs, and there would be a tie between Italy and the US in the standings.

What would happen in the event of a tie?

The first round is the only round where there could be a tie, this is because the system of play will be the league system, each team playing one match against each of the other teams in the same group, with three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat.
But the round of sixteen, quarterfinals, semifinals, play-off for third place and final will all be played in accordance with the knock-out system. That means, that if after 90 minutes, a match ends in a draw, extra time of twice 15 minutes will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner.

UNTIE THE TIE OF THE FIRST ROUND:
The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria,their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup

In the event of a tie in points, the teams with the best Goal Difference (G.D.) oges through. GD= Goals scored-Goals conceeded.
If GD is same/tied, then the team scoring maximum goals goes through.
If ALL these are tied, then I don't know what happens!!!
But never in WC history has such a thing arose.

Well, besides the match score there's a "backup" score in the event teams are even. They (don't ask who He!) will sum up points based in something like this.

The team(s) get 3 points for every match previously win.
They get 1 point for every tie game, even with a "0" score
Of course, if they don't win they got nothing!
