Definately the egg. There were many species of animals that reproduced with eggs far before the chicken existed. However, if you are referring to the chicken egg, then there had to be a first chicken, and that chicken had to have come from an egg making that egg the first chicken egg that came before the chicken. Now a chicken did not necessarily lay that egg because at some point in the evolution of that specie was that bird finally truly genetically a chicken.

This is one of the great mysteries of the chicken. The egg came first because all chickens are born from an egg, chicken don't just appear out of mid-air. The egg came from a chicken-like organism according to the theory of evolution. The egg must have had a genetic mutaion that happened to a few eggs.

EGG!
Actually this has a real answer. According to the book "Random Kinds of Factness: 1001 (or so) Absolutely True Tidbits About (mostly) Everything" by Erin Barrett and Jack Mingo the egg came first.
According to their research chickens evolved from early Indochina birds called red jungle fowl. Mutations in the jungle fowls eggs produced things more like chickens...these bred with other bird causing more mutations producing todays chicken.
So the eggs have it!

Technically, there is no proof that the egg came before the chicken.
What if the ancestors of the chickens actually gave birth and chickens form before they suddenly decided to lay eggs?
(Example, mammals used to lay eggs, but ended up giving birth, the platypus still continue to lay eggs)
What if the theory of evolution is false and the chicken was actually created from a cross breed of two weird organisms?
(Example, small percentage of mules are actually fertile)
The answer to the question: We will never know.

The Egg. Don't listen to all that religious psycho-babble bullsh*t those bible toters tell you.
Two animals that were different(kinda like cross breeding in dogs today) produced an egg that the modern day chicken sprouted from.
Noone magically produces a chicken out of thin air.

chicken...through evolution, creatures began in the ocean, eventually some growing legs to become land dwelling...more evolution...the eventual chicken as we know it is formed, so that chicken was the first chicken to lay the first egg to become the first chick from the first egg that the first chicken layed. That's my theory anyway.
