For a first time author (only had poetry published). It's really good though - I have been told.

For a first-time author it is stupendous. You should really have an agent for all of your Q. Read a dozen posts and replies here; you'll see most of the people here can't even spell properly. Asking them about publishing is like asking the little chrome bulldog on a Mack truck about interstate commerce.

Yes, that is a great advance on a novel, ecspecially if it's your first one! Most authors don't get half that much (excluding a few giants in the business like Stephen King or Sidney Sheldon, etc.) for an advance. Some bargain basenment publishers even ask authors if they can put up money up front. T.D. Jakes had to put up $10,000 to get his first book published by the company that produced his first book. Invest the money wisely.

Awesome! Congratulations!!
Your publisher obviously thinks he's got a hot property. Work with him to help market and promote it, and prove he's right, so the royalties come pouring in.
Good on ya!
