Eastern, Arabic and Mediterranean cultures all look after their elderly family members in their homes until they die.

Is the Nursing Home a selfish concept?

That's the best idea, keep them at home. We did as long as we could.
However, its more difficult that you think. Most people in this culture work outside the home. In other cultures they do not. We have a lot here because we work all the time. You can not care for an elderly person if you are not there. If you try to do it in shifts-then no one gets any sleep.
Some Nursing homes are the pits-I agree. But some are great. You must prepare for the time when you have to deal with this. It is gut-wrenching. But 'good' nursing home is better than keep ing sick old people at home. Try it for a couple of years and it will wreck your life.

Some people do not have the space, nor the time, to properly care for the elderly. That makes nursing homes a good option.

But are the elderly getting any better care IN a nursing home? Thats a whole nother question.

Tough question. However, I can say that after what happened in Mississippi when Katrina hit, I probably would want to know that my parents are really doing O.K. A nursing staff ran out on the entire hospital leaving elderly to perish.

But, it's like anything, you have to live with looking at yourself in the mirror. If you make wrong choices for selfish reasons, it will catch up to you. If you make decisions based on the most available information at hand and resources available, then probably you won't regret your decision, even if things go wrong.

in my view, definite it will be large if the elderly ought to stay of their homes until eventually death, properly treated. although the US would not help that in any respect structure or type. the money earners (mom & pop both paintings lately) to help the elderly (maximum elderly have little or no money) & their different relations are operating lengthy hours to make this ensue. the position are the elderly day care centers that folk may have sufficient money or, are area of our social protection retirement advantages? tax breaks? proper & low-cost transportation to appointments? low-cost meds? there are countless complications! a nursing domicile is a approach to an end, to the country's failure to really absolutely worth the elderly. vote for individuals which have a answer to this example! it really is the in reality thanks to modify it except you prefer to come back up with some reliable law. bypass for it & reliable success!

In some cases, no.
My great grandfather had alzheimers, and though we never put him in a nursing home, he was too much to handle.
He had no idea he was even with family, he swore up and down he lived with a bunch of strangers, and when my mother tried to help him one day he beat her with his cane.
Sometimes it can be dangerous or take too much of an emotional tole on the family, so in some cases, nursing homes are fine.

It's pretty much an American thing - not Western. The majority of Europeans and Latin Americans do indeed take care of their elderly.

It is. It is one of the few things I don't understand about America. Respect for the elderly is almost universal everywhere else.

Not considering it takes both spouses working to get by. Our society is too fast-paced.

I'd rather my grandmother or whoever be in a home taken care of, instead of sitting in my home alone all day while I was at work.
