Is it just me, or is it nearly impossible to meet people on the internet these days? All the chat rooms on Yahoo and AIM are loaded with bots and perverts. If anyone knows of a good website for meeting or talking to people, please tell me about it.

Just to clarify, I just mean meeting people in general, not looking for a romance/match maker website or anything like that. I also already know about Myspace.

Thanks!
And if anyone wants to chat my Yahoo ID is swans_of_never

I honestly do not place any faith on meeting people in ANY chat room at all. I just basically hardly ever go to a chat room. because some people will be, you know, like you described them, there will ALWAYS be them hanging out in every chat room on the net, so you never know who you are really chatting with and the only way to find out SUCKS because that means getting more personal with them . . and then it's too late if they are a perv.

You know, I really think there is a better chance of meeting a nice person just browsing books at a popular bookstore, or a small cafe or cafe concert or even StarBucks for that matter.

Do you ever try IRC (internet relay chat)? Some of the communities on efnet, dalnet and undernet have been around for over a decade and don't tolerate the sort of thing you're describing. Other nets like gamesurge and freenode cater to specialized communities, internet gaming and open source software developement and support respectively.

You can download a client fairly easily or use a chat client like Gaim or Trillian to connect. You should probably also read a brief tutorial to help you understant the universe of irc.

Also you can search the web for irc channels (#channelname) that correspond to your interests. Good luck.

There's something to be said for IRC (Internet Relay Chat), the first major chat system on the Internet, starting back in 1990. While traditionally it is not as user-friendly or feature-rich as AIM, Yahoo Instant Messenger, or other "IM" applications, the client programs used to connect to it have improved considerably. The crowd on IRC is generally more technically savvy and global, and on major networks of IRC, you can find over 100,000 potential people to connect to. If you have some time and patience to learn how to navigate it, I'd recommend you try it out.
