Some say Genoa, Italy, others say France. Some even said his family changed their last name from Cohen to Columbus because of the Inquistion, when Jews were persecuted. Even though Italy is the recognized birthplace of Columbus, there is legitimate reason to believe he was from France.

Columbus was British, but because Queen Elizabeth wouldn't charter his voyage (ie: pay for it) he went to the Spanish court, who were more than happy for help in expanding their empire.

So, he was British working for the Spanish. Otherwise known as a "free agent".

Interesting answers. I always heard that he was born in Genoa, Italy & went to Spain when he couldn't find a sponsor in Italy. I never heard anything about France, Spain or England.

most will tell u Italy but that is the wrong guy simply because his Italian was the worst any body had seen written but most historians think he he came from a well to do family in Spain
