I want to recovery my computer system but I have so many programs, documents, music files... on it that I can't risk deleting them all. Is there a way that I can keep those files on there but still recover the system?

Your pc creates restore points. So try this procedure first before attempting to reinstall the OS.

Launch Help & Support Center, select undo changes to your computer with System Restore. Select Restore to my computer to an earlier time. Next screen brings up a Calender. Any bolded date is a restorable point.

Start with latest newest entry. If there are a number of restore points keep trying backward until one works.

Sometimes may not work at all. Trust XP restore points to be unreliable! When this fails it goes without saying that backup is very very very important.

I use other Restore programs to maintain a copy of the Registry. This way I can refresh the computer when it starts to slooow down! The Registry is always the culprit!

To answer your question - reinstalling the OS will not destroy DATA as long as you don't choose to reformat. Just choose to delete and install over the previous installs. Your link to programs will disappear of course because they are stored in your Registry.

May I suggest another way to fix your computer. Download XP Repair Pro and run the trial version to clean up your Registry. Other Freeware registry repairer programs are also out there. Go surf for them.

System recovery will basically reinstall everything back to its factory settings, which means everything you ever installed or downloaded after you got your computer will be deleted.

Do you have a CD burner? You will need to just make a back up by making a data CD. Or you can just use that website xdrive.com to backup your stuff if you dont have a CD burner. After recovery, you can just download from xdrive.com all the files you uploaded to their file hosting site.

It will erase all data, and reinstall EVERYTHING. So no, you will not have your files anymore =(
