What a bleak outlook your question has. It would be tempting to try to lambaste your question by taking a partisan stance and try to show you why we are headed in the right direction. However, our nation's future does not lie in any one president or administration. Our nation's promising future lies in its past and the hopes of its citizens today.
Primarily in our past due to the great document of nation's Constitution. Despite what many may say this document is the ultimate guideline to where our nation will go. It is the checks and balances that this document states our government must work within that keeps tyrants from taking power. That people can take security believing that the best interests of the nation at large will be sought.
Sure there will be mistakes along the way and one year may seem worse than the previous, but that has been true for all of time. What will get us through is if we as citizens continue to live in the manner that made our country great.
In the words of Alexander Solzenitschen [sic], the US is great, because the US is good. Which country gives the most humanitarian aide worldwide, the US? What country triumphs the needs of the oppressed, the US? What country sends more aide workers everywhere, the US? We have our shortcomings and our failures, but our citizens truly desire to aspire to better things and take the world along with them.
If we fail anywhere it is because we as citizens have become apathetic to human need, lazy, selfish, greedy and gluttonous. When we as citizens get this way then we allow our politicians to become so too. We elect people who we believe will protect our selfish desires or worse yet, we just allow them to take office because we refused to vote.
People think their vote has no power. They look at the 2000 election and say the the presidency was stolen. Well, wake up. Your vote does count, you have the ability to vote in your local election. That person you vote for there may run for higher offices and have greater authority to make decisions that you believe are in our nation's best interest. But it takes you to get out there and vote for them and support them and tell others about them. Get off your butt and vote. Become a part of the process.
Finally, keep in mind that you are not promised another day on this earth more than the minute you are breathing now. By reading your local paper you will see there are many people whose lives were ended in the blink of an eye. You have today and now to live and enjoy the life you have. Make the best choices you can for the betterment of others and if you don't get to see the nation in 5 years, those who do may have only you to thank for the benefits they enjoy.

We will be rid of Bush, and the troops will be withdrawn!
Awful nice of Bush to say the troops would be withdrawn in 2009, especially when he won't be president.
Bush is a terrorist, and that how much of the world sees him!
If we are going to get rid of terrorism, lets start with him!
As for the US, I am more afraid of the systematic destruction of our liberties under the Constitution and Bill of rights. Both are being attacked by Bush and the Us Supreme Court mad up of Republican Fascist like Scalia and perverts, like Thomas. Seven of 9 are neocons, except Souter, though he is Republican! Four were appointed by the Bushes! They have struck down two liberties within the past two weeks. The anti-abortionist must be licking their chops!
This Supreme court are such idiots,They ruled it is OK for Fox to lie, even when they know it is a lie. And a reporter was fired when she refused to boadcast the story! Huh??
How are we to believe anything the media says now?
What about lawsuits? I guess they will be eleminated next!

I think to end the 'war' you need to get to cause, and effect.
We burn through so much oil, it's stupid. Pulling the plug on THAT trend will likely save this country hundreds of billions of dollars, so will planting a boot in Exxon's hip pocket. A 4-cylinder will do most jobs we now use an 8-cylinder for, and more efficiently. The original Ford Model T was not only a 4-cylinder, it ran on ETHANOL. Save your gas every chance you get, get out and VOTE in November, and be vocal on what you think would be positive reforms for America. Let your representatives know,
and write to your paper etc. Conservation, spending reforms, better public oversight, these are the ways of the future...or, keep burning gas, don't read the paper, and don't be surprised when Congress hands over the rest of your civil liberties and your citizenship...

With the way oil and metal prices are going up, our economy will still be struggling. We are always going to have some pathetic group of people blowing us up. Bush did not get us into this state. If you look back on history we have always been a struggling nation. You just see more problems now because everything is televised. All in all we will be ok, heck we're America. You can beat us down, but never kill us.

Housing starts are higher than they have been in the last 116 years. The recession Clinton started is over, the stock market is hovering around 11,000, we are winning the war in both Iraq and Afghanistan, the unemployment is at 4.3%. My advice is to sit back and enjoy the good times before the Democrats start messing everything up by raising taxes and surrendering to the terrorists.

It will depend on who or what gets voted into office, this Novembers election is one of the most important ever, democrats need to take back one of the houses to provide checks and balance to the system as it is right now you have a dumb *** for a president and a rubber stamp for a congress. You can see where it has gotten us. Nothing but trouble. What Americans should do is vote. It is so important.

I don't about 5 yrs from now, but, Bush will have this country so
ruined, that terrorists won't think we're worth thinking about.
With all the in-fighting going on, they've probably accomplished
their mission.

Both------Bush has already left his 666 on the US and the rest of the world. He should be impeached and charged with war crimes, among many other charges.
Someone will push a red button and of course, we will respond in kind, and blow ourselves to bits because of this idiot in office now.
