Sunlight is known as white light. Whit light is made up of seven different colored lights: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. When a ray of white light passes through a prism, it breaks into its components. This happens because all the seven colored lights have different wavelenghts and slightly diferent travelling speeds. A water droplet acts like a prism and refracts/divides white light into its seven componenets resulting in a rainbow.

Light from the sun is composed of the seven colors found in the rainbow. when all these seven colors come together, they for a white light. Now when it is raining, the white light passes through the water drops from the rain. The water drops acts as a prism. So when the light passes through the water drop, it splits into seven diffrent color forming a huge rainbow.

Sunlight strikes the front of a raindrop. The entering white light is refracted and separated into it's component colors. These colors then bounce off of the back of the drop and are bent again as they leave the drop, behaving as if they had passed through a prism.

It is just an effect of how light moves through water. You see the light goes through the water particles. As the sun hits them, they are hitting at different angles. Each angle causes a different color of the spectrum (ranibow) to come through.
