charles darwin is generally credited with giving us the theory of evolution; he presented his paper along with that of wallace at the same time to the royal society
however, nothing charles darwin gave us was original; virtually everything he said in regard to evolution had already been said by someone else, several others in fact, not the least being his grandfather, erasmus darwin
blythe and others also suggested his ideas before him

Lamarck
"Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck (August 1, 1744 – December 28, 1829) was a French naturalist and an early proponent of the idea that evolution occurred and proceeded in accordance with natural laws." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamark
Darwin came up with natural selection, which is that stronger animals pass on their genes. Lamarck believed that by changing themselves animals would change their offspring.
Lamarck came first, but Darwin's theory was better.

Lamarck thought of the idea, which of course was wrong but never called it that until Charles Darwin studied on the galapagoes then published the origin of species which inside the cover was everything he studied and the term evoulution came aobut because he said that things evolve slowly over periods of time. Accoriding to four major things he wrote in his book
