Will it ruin the battery? Or will a new charge simply bring it back up to the voltage it needs to be?

No dumb answers please, I report these as abuse.

it should be avoided, but it will not cause serious side efects if you dont do it often. deep cycle batteries are specificly made for continuous deep cycles(deep means a realy deep discharge and a cycle is the cycle of charge and discharge)

PS. sometimes dumb answers are intended as humor for everyone. lighten up buddy.

Deep Cycle Battery Discharge

If TOO MUCH means draining the battery until it no longer will run motor/lights/etc. then you should be ok if you fully charge it before the next use.
if TOO MUCH means too many cycles then the battery will still accept a charge (surface charge) but the charge will not perform the work for as long as it did when new.
A deep cycle batter has a limit on the number of charge/discharge cycles that it can endure.

A deep cycle battery is designed to be significantly drained and recharged with no ill effects. Starting batteries, like the ones in cars, WILL usually fail partially or completely if they are discharged all the way. Charge up your deep-cycle and you should be good to go.

Well, as you can drain deep cycle batteries and re-use them after charging, you would assume draining them too much would be the end of the show?

Deep cycle batteries last longer when being completely discharged. But, all batteries develop crystals when discharged. If possible, do not discharge beyond 50%.
