franchise is safer as a rule, they have an established name, have conducted market research ect, but are as a rule more costly than starting you own business from scratch

The question you really need to ask, is what kind of business does your community need and what are you good at. No point in purchasing a franchise or starting a business if the marketplace is already flooded (don't open a coffee shop on a street that has five Starbucks). Also, just opening a business isn't a good idea if the type of business isn't going to be of any real interest to you. Figure out what your marketplace requires then look into franchising opportunities. Best way is to do a comparison of the outlay costs and assumed first years revenues for the type of business you want, from both a franchise point of view and a single self opening. Just be very cognizant of anything you are getting into with a franchise. It may seem like a great deal with an all in one type situation, but there are certain considerations as a business owner that you really don't want someone telling you what to do, and you are in essence inviting a larger corporation to control a certain amount of your business.

I looked into franchises myself and found that you are essentially purchasing a job. The ones I looked into required you to be there all day every day, and even told you how many employees you could hire. That just wasn't for me because there were a great deal of rules and I feel that if I own the business and dropped a very large investment, why would I follow someone else's idea of what hours I work, etc. Many of them do not yield a high return either. I decided to go into business for myself and have never looked back. I would like to say I set my own hours, but essentially you are at the mercy of your contacts and customers. But I can still decide whether or not I want to put in 8 hrs each day or if I choose to go on holidays, I know the business will continue to grow because I have some key people in place. It cost me under $200 to get started and I have been earning an income ever since.

I agree with pobept, I would go franchise because you already know what you are getting whereas if you start something new who knows how long it would last and you wouldn't want to spend all of that money for nothing, right? If you do have a really unique idea that you truly believe would do great why not try it out first, use some market research companies to test out the idea on consumers first (preferably those who will be in the general area where the business is to be located) and see how they respond to the idea. Whatever you decide I wish you good luck and continued success, God Bless.

Your choice should reflect how much time and energy you have on a daily basis. If you also want to travel then go with a franchise. If you are ready to pay a business manager to handle all the paperwork , employee problems, and product management AND want to travel then go with either choice. If you are bored and want some place to grow and nurture every day then create your own business, but get a business plan in place first and then follow it or you will be giving your money away. Good luck.

I would consider first off where you live and the size of your town/community. Franchise cost more to get into but are just about guaranteed profit. I come from a small town and I have seen business after business go under. Just my opinion, and what I think that I would do. Good Luck.

as a businessman for 8 years i would advise you to consider franchise especially when you are new to the business world. even in franchise there are those that are register with the british franchisor and also those that are not. look into that too. those that are register are far more safer that those that are not.
do not rush into anything. take your time to look into various franchise magazines. they are sold in book many shops and it comes out at difference times. the chances of success in doing your own is slim and would not last for long. they are a lot of unpredictable circumstances which you have to encounter.
so go on a much safer journey. best of luck and the good Lord be with you.
