Citronella plants planted around the perimeter of your property keep away mosguitos and some other pesty bugs. The oil from them is what is used in the candles burned for the same reason.
Also, if you have a problem with Japanese Beatles eating your flowers and plants ouside, I heard that if you save the orange rinds when you eat your oranges and boil them in water until the oils are in the water, let it cool and strain out the rinds, pour the water into a spray bottle and spray it on your outdoor plants. The Japanese Beatles don't like the bitter taste of the rinds. I have not tried this but heard it works. Venus Fly Traps can eat bugs or flies that land on their leaves, they get stuck, the leaves close and the plant digests them. Works great in the house.

Marigolds deter most pests...they are considered the workhorse of the garden. Plant liberally throughout. Also, if you plant radishes with your cucumbers, the bugs that like cucumber plants will eat the radish instead. Onions are also good to plant amongst your plants. My mother always puts rhubarb leaves around tomatoe plants to keep grubs away. Basil is supposed to deter mosquitos. Hope these suggestions help.
