Ping is one of those software remnants from the DOS era of networking. It is still being used today to check connectivety between servers and other pcs or between a network of pcs.
Windows XP still maintain a bunch of DOS level commandline exe programs.

I have 2 pcs and a laptop networked and I regularly "ping" them to see if they can see each other.

Try following:
Go Run_Type in "CMD". Enter.
When the DOS prompt appears, type in "ipconfig". Enter

A set of info appear for your Ethernet adaptor LAN card if you have one installed.
The most important one is your IP Address

If you don't have a Ethernet Adaptor installed then it will display an IP Address generated randomly.

Now go Type that set of numbers. Example "239.123.234.1". Type "ping 239.123.234.1". Enter.
Because your PC is "pinging" itself the result displayed will something like this " "Reply from 239.123.234.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128". Everything is OK is what it all means.

While online you can check if a website is returning your pinging. Type in CMD "ping.www.hotmail.com".

If you're having trouble with a printer, scanner or networked drive you can send a command - ping, with the printer etc ip address to see if its connected properly. This is done at the DOS prompt.

"Ping" is a term used to describe the sending of four separate little transmissions from your computer to another website to see if your computer is actually trying to reach that site, and how fast (or not) it does so. For instance, from the command prompt, you can type in:
PING www.yahoo.com (and hit enter), and you'll see what the result is on your screen.
